Location and site:
In the centre of northern Mexico, 700 km. away from Mexico City, the city of Zacatecas is situated in a narrow valley at the foot of the Cerro de la Bufa. It is located at more than 2,400 m. above sea level.
Administrative Status:
Capital of the State of Zacatecas.
Registration Criteria:
Zacatecas is one of the most important centres for the extraction of silver between the colonial Spanish era and the present. Its architecture and its design reflect its economic importance and cultural blossoming, the influence of which can be seen in Central and North America. (II) It is a remarkable example of a colonial European city which is perfectly adapted to the constraints of a metalliferous mountainous region. (IV)
