In the Culture, Urban Future report, UNESCO advocates for the role of culture as an enabler for sustainable development, affirming that culture is at the heart of urban renewal and innovation. However, in many historic cities, the closures of several historic sites and museums during the pandemic created significant challenges for those involved in culture and heritage. New technologies have helped organizations to reach out to the public. Moreover, adequate aid measures have supported artists and artisans to cope with the crisis.

Case studies
- Krakow: Tackling the challenges of the Covid-19 crisis
Kraków, like many popular tourist heritage cities, became deserted. As a result of the pandemic crisis, the structure of the so far tourist-oriented market is changing dynamically. In response to this situation, the city has announced major campaigns for a turn towards locality and a deep exploration of the city’s cultural heritage.
The promotion of lesser-known sites, niche museums, individual monuments, micro-workshops, and at the same time a campaign to promote local businesses, shops, craftsmen – this is one thing; on the other hand, it is important to work on a sustainable tourism policy, to maintain the process of heritage revaluation, and programmes in response to Covid: the Resilient Culture programme, innovations in management, the new digital platform for culture PlayKraków, and the creation of new hubs for culture: the Potocki Palace – as a hub for: Tourism – Heritage – Culture – the interdisciplinary area of cooperation.
- Regensburg: Heads up – creative ideas for culture in Regensburg in difficult times
Technical tools can help us to promote and mediate culture and our heritage sites – but let’s also admit the restrictions that come with digital only experiences. Examples from Regensburg/Germany.
