The Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) is pleased to announce the membership of the city of Gimhae, Republic of Korea. This remarkable city enriches our network with its exceptional site, the Tumuli of Gaya, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 2023.
The Tumuli of Gaya bear witness to an ancient and unique civilization in East Asia, the Gaya Confederation. This serial property, consisting of seven archaeological sites, includes the famous ancient tombs of Daeseong-dong, located in Gimhae. These cemeteries contain monumental tumuli dedicated to the high rulers of the seven Gaya chiefdoms, reflecting an original political system in which independent entities shared a common culture.
Listed under criterion (iii) of UNESCO, this site provides exceptional evidence of cultural and political coexistence in ancient East Asia. The layout and richness of the tombs attest to autonomous but interconnected governance and dynamic exchanges with neighboring states.
By joining the OWHC, Gimhae is committing itself to the constructive sharing of experiences with other member cities. We warmly welcome Gimhae to our international network dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of World Heritage cities!
