The project "Urban Gardening" of the city of Bamberg is related to one of the three parts of the World Heritage Site known as Gardeners’ Town. Vegetable gardens and gardeners’ houses form a unique urban landscape even today. Since the late Middle Ages gardeners have cultivated lands east of the right branch of the river Regnitz. Urban gardening is still an important economic and cultural component of the World Heritage Site. Because the sector has shrunk, however, much gardening land in the inner-city area has fallen out of use – spaces for which sensitive uses must now be found. The project “Urban Gardening” is intended to keep alive the typical Bamberg gardeners’ culture, to develop new methods of gardening and to preserve the unique and outstanding inner-city gardening lands as part of the UNESCO World Heritage. It is a boundary-transcending model project with many actors and stakeholders. The project “Urban Gardening” of the City of Bamberg is run by the Bamberg Centre of World Heritage in cooperation with the Landesgartenschau Bamberg 2012 GmbH (State Garden Show Bamberg 2012 Ltd.). It is supported by funds from the Federal Republic of Germany’s National UNESCO World Heritage Sites investment programme. For more information see www.welterbe.bamberg.de
