Regional Meeting, Lamu, Kenya - March, 2004

The three World Heritage Towns of Lamu, Mozambique Island and Zanzibar met for three days in March 2004 to deliberate upon a number of relevant topics to the new Regional Secretariat.

The meeting was a follow-up to the first which took place last year in Zanzibar. Whereas the Zanzibar Meeting deliberated chiefly on Heritage and Economics, the theme for the Lamu meeting was ‘Imparting History’.

The meeting was attended by Mayors Kicheko, Gulamo and Keis respectively from Lamu, Mozambique Island and Zanzibar Stone Town. Ms. Bente Methisen represented the World Heritage City of Bergen while UNESCO World Heritage Centre was represented by the Head of African desk, Dr. Elizabeth Wangari.

During the discussion of the theme, delegates from all three Cities of the region insisted in imparting history through both academic and practical means. They categorically hinted that continuous use of building for the originally designed purpose is among the best ways of imparting history related to the building.

Eventually the Lamu Accord was signed aimed at consolidating the Regional Secretariat through joint Projects.
