One thing is for sure now that the World Heritage Visitor´s Centre Regensburg is open one year: It has become an attractive institution not only for Regensburg’s guests but also for its citizens. "We are proud of the fact, that we could cover these different target groups as well as families and students.  With our visitor´s Centre we play a leading role in the circle of world heritage cities”, head of the Planning- and Building Division of the City of Regensburg Christine Schimpfermann stresses out. Even in the promotion of the idea of World Heritage Regensburg proves to be innovative.

The World Heritage Visitor´s Centre Regensburg covers 650 square meters in the historic Salt barn right beside the famous old Stone Bridge. It was established with the support of the Federal Republic of Germany, the European Union and the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Development. When it opened in May 2011 the public interest was overwhelming and up to now 298.039 guests attended the exhibition.

This permanent exhibition was created for a large target group. Modern technologies in addition to traditional presentation methods and unique exhibits implement the essence of Heritage Regensburg here. The exhibition consists of five areas dealing with different aspects of the World Heritage Regensburg. It is situated in cabinets that are hung from the ceiling. Thus, the impression of the historic warehouse building could be preserved.

The first area presents the topic ‘UNESCO World Heritage’ in an international and local perspective. A large interactive globe shows all and provides information about World Heritage sites around the world. The second subject is development of the city. This cabinet contains a multimedia-based model of the city which presents the development of Regensburg over the last 2000 years. The third theme refers to Regensburg as a medieval trading city located on the River Danube. Especially the different functions of the Stone Bridge, Regensburg’s historic Landmark, are explained. The area “Life in the city” deals with religion, art, science, and the social history of the Regensburg. Among other things scenes of historic life are presented in miniature dioramas. The fifth theme is ‘City of Imperial Diets’. It is about Regensburg’s history as city of general assemblies of the Imperial Estates of the Holy Roman Empire.

In the World Heritage Visitor´s Centre is also space for events, presentations and other activities. Also children’s programs take place here. And at the Information Point you can get information about Regensburg, tickets for sightseeing tours, boat trips, and more tourist services. It is crucial, that the Centre is meant to be as the first step into Regensburg´s World Heritage. So called Links lead the visitor into the Old Town of Regensburg and show the way to the different sights and museums. Also the lot of positive feedback in the Centre´s guestbook proves the high quality and acceptance of the exhibition.

For those, who want to have more than a first impression the city of Regensburg provides a real-time Panorama of the Visitor´s Centre here.
